Seeking Community In Troubled Times?
You are not alone.
This past spring, I stumbled upon a non-profit group that has since become a central focus in my work.
A community of communities seems a bit meta... but it's also the best way to glean wisdom from a broad spectrum of lifestyles that meet the needs of people seeking solutions to a plethora of crises we're in:
Affordable housing, isolation and lonliness, mental health, aging in place, nature connection, local food systems, gift economies, emotional competency, resilience, and healthy communication of our needs and unique gifts.
What happened to rites of passage in village life?
What happened to multigenerational learning outside your backdoor?
What happened to affordable housing, affordable Healthcare, affordable childcare, and affordable self care? Since when does it all cost you more than you're able to make in a standard work week?
There is more labor to be done than "bread" labor (aka making a living) - the average American doesn't have time to educate themselves or be involved in social, political, spiritual, relational, or personal transformation. We're all too damn busy working several jobs just to pay the bills. This work has been happening in the "village" or community setting for as long as humans have been on the planet. We've only recently stripped ourselves from this human birthright with our intensely independent culture.
I suspect a new way of living is coming - not out of an idealized utopian dream that breeds its own ideological hellscape - but out of survival. A need to reconnect with our elders, our environment, and our children's education.
A new story is coming. And if you're interested in writing it here in the PNW, join the next community call. We just had our *first* one last night!

About NICA’s Community Café:
Come and join us at our monthly Community Café. This is a virtual call hosted on Zoom and is open to the public. During these calls, we foster a casual and welcoming environment for anyone that's interested in Intentional Communities or starting their own. It's the perfect opportunity to ask questions, seek advice, share experiences, network, or simply mingle with others with similar interests.
We especially encourage those who are aspiring to form a community and individuals willing to support the formation process (and join as a member when it's established) to join the call.
