Home Scouts Class (April 21) Shelter, tools, language barriers, bushcraft, camo
Shelter, tools, language barriers, bushcraft, camouflage
@ Lavender at Stillwater (Misty Valley Farm)
8328 Carnation Duvall Rd NE, Carnation, WA
Special guest: Angela Evatt and Brandon
At this class, you’ll receive a sign language lesson before playing a silent forest game! Before we learn American Sign Language, we’ll discuss Deaf culture, language and communication barriers, and how interpretation is a tool. We will push ourselves to stay silent and practice visual communication so we can experience a different perspective and language style.
How does learning sign language apply to bushcraft? We’ll talk about that too!
We will continue to learn signs as as build a debris hut shelter and explore other bush-craft tools like rope, knives, fire tools, stones, tarps, compass, maps, and more. We hope to have an open discussion around why shelter and language needs hold equal weight as a survival tool. We’ll ask questions like: What is camouflage and how is it used socially or emotionally? How does camo help us achieve our goals? Why is camo fun? How is language and cultural adaptation a survival tool? Why do we need shelter? Can we have shelter without community?
For this class, it might be fun to bring your own tools from home if you have something cool to show off. We can play show and tell, and especially storytime from our own experiences.
Bring shoes comfortable for the forest, closed toes ideally.
Bring layers and gloves if you don’t want to get your hands dirty picking up moss/duff
Tea will be served. Bring snacks or food (for yourself or to share) if you’d like.
Sliding scale - pay what you can.
