In this class, Alicia will share her story about how she became a wildlife photographer and the ecology of our home among predators. Alicia has spent hundreds of hours tracking big cats, bears, coyotes, and other wildlife that our modern society tries eagerly to keep away. We’ll be asking questions like: How can we live among animals that could hurt us? What kind of behavior could we expect from animals near our homes, or if we encounter one in the wild? What does coexistence look like for humans and wild animals?

We’ll discuss conservation of habitat from a variety of perspectives, including how fire works in the landscape. We’ll still prepare a fire for boiling water for tea or roasting snacks - and we’ll also use it to play some games!

Our first two classes focused on fire as an ancestor and fire as a survival tool - this class is about balancing safety and fun with fire. Just like we’ll discuss living in balance with wild animals, we’ll balance our experience of fire with a little friendly competition! Prepare yourself for FIRE OLYMPICS as we play with matches and candles, mazes and wrestling, and teams with prizes!

Please bring:

  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty

  • A chair or blanket to sit on (optional if you prefer the picnic tables and stumps around the firepit)

  • Snacks to roast over the fire

  • A tea cup or thermos
